HALINÁ Modern Filipino Kitchen + Bar: Dinner and Drinks on East Hastings

From Port Moody, the Barnet Highway leads onto Hastings Street, which runs straight through Burnaby to Halina’s block of East Hastings in Vancouver. It is a modern Filipino kitchen and bar with a playful cocktail list and a menu that takes Filipino classics in new directions.

The Room

Inside, a hand-painted tropical mural runs above rattan banquettes, and the energy comes from upbeat music and tables that tend to order for the whole group. Halina describes itself as the place where a modern palate meets Filipino soul.

The restaurant grew out of Bigboy’s Chigs To-Go, a takeout and catering business run by four friends, and the dining room keeps that welcoming, come-as-you-are spirit.

Behind the Bar

The signature cocktails lean on Filipino flavours: the Kalabaw puts a Filipino twist on the Moscow Mule, the Ube Margarita uses house-made ube syrup, and the GinPom is Halina’s version of a Philippine party favourite. There are Filipino beers like Red Horse and San Miguel, and A LâQUE wines, made in Canada by Filipino creators from BC apples.

Zero-Proof Options

Drivers are covered too. The alcohol-free list includes the Pandan Fizz, the Hindi-to Mojito and the El Nido, plus calamansi and mango slushies.

Tambayan Hour

Happy hour, which Halina calls Tambayan Hour, runs every day from 8 p.m. to close and from 2 to 5 p.m. on weekends.
